A Renaissance of Groove
Following the Deluxe Editions of Heavy Metal, Heavy Mellow, and Sunshine, Captain Funk returns with Renaissance, a brand-new full-length album featuring all-new material. Built on the swinging rhythms of contemporary garage house and broken beats, the album combines catchy melodies, soulful vocals, and rap with Captain Funk’s signature blend of funk, soul, and electronic dance music. Album Description
Marking a new chapter in the evolution of Captain Funk, Renaissance is an uplifting dance album built around the swinging grooves of contemporary garage house and broken beats, infused with catchy melodies, rich vocal harmonies, and dynamic rap performances. Written, composed, arranged, performed, programmed, mixed, and mastered entirely by Tatsuya Oe, the album reflects a singular artistic vision and a remarkable level of craftsmanship throughout.
Unlike many contemporary electronic releases, Renaissance contains no downtempo moments. From beginning to end, the album maintains a consistently energetic and uplifting atmosphere, delivering a seamless listening experience driven by rhythm, melody, and positive momentum.
Highlights include the gospel- and R&B-inspired layered vocal arrangements of “Exhale” and “Capricious”; the infectious piano riffs and memorable hooks of “Surrender to Your Love,” “Don’t You Know,” and “Let’s Get Away”; the vocal chops and polyrhythmic grooves of “Accelerate Me” and “Say Something”; the funky bassline and preacher-style vocal messages of “Work for Good”; the breakbeat-driven rap track “Lazy Now,” which questions society’s growing dependence on technology; and the Afro-influenced tropical house groove of “Get Free.”
Blending contemporary club music aesthetics with deep roots in soul, funk, R&B, and hip-hop, Renaissance showcases the distinctive sound that has defined Captain Funk while pushing it forward into new territory. Its combination of swinging rhythms, accessible melodies, expressive vocals, and relentless groove makes the album both a celebration of dance music and a statement of artistic renewal. As its title suggests, Renaissance stands as a declaration of rebirth, creativity, and forward momentum from one of electronic music’s most distinctive independent voices.
